Commencement 2014 Information and FAQs
Congratulations to all students who are graduating on May 21st!
This year our Commencement will be in two parts, all held on Wednesday, May 21st. Graduates will participate in the Rutgers University Newark Commencement at 9 am at the Prudential Center. The keynote speaker at the University Commencement will be Don Katz, CEO, Audible, Inc. The morning’s ceremonies will be followed by the Law School Graduate Recognition Ceremony at 2 pm at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC). Students will be recognized individually on stage and receive their diplomas at the afternoon exercise.
What is the timeline of the day for graduates?
|7:30 am||Graduates report to the Prudential Center for University Commencement.|
|9:00 am||University Commencement begins at the Prudential Center.|
|12:00 pm||Law School students are dismissed from the University Commencement.|
|12:30 pm||Lunch is served to graduates - details regarding the lunch are still being finalized and will be posted ASAP.|
|1:45 pm||Graduates line up for the ceremony.|
|2:00 pm||The Law School Graduate Recognition ceremony begins.|
|4:00 pm||Conclusion of the ceremony. At this time you will have an opportunity to meet up with family, friends, and fellow graduates and take photographs.|
|4:15-5:00 pm||Reception at the Law School — graduates and guests are invited back to the Law School for light refreshments to toast your new status as alumni(ae). The Law School (and “Legal Matter”) will be open all afternoon for those of you who wish to show your guests around after the ceremonies.|
Do I have to attend a graduation rehearsal?
No. There is no graduation rehearsal.
How many guest tickets can I have?
Each student is allotted 6 guest tickets for the University Commencement at the Prudential Center. For the Law School Graduate Recognition ceremony at NJPAC, each graduate is initially allotted 5 tickets. More may be made available upon request to Dean Rothman.
Do children need a ticket to attend the ceremonies at Prudential Center and NJPAC?
Yes, EVERYONE needs a ticket to enter, even an infant.
Do graduates need a ticket for Prudential Center and NJPAC?
Yes. Graduates will receive their Prudential ticket in advance and their NJPAC ticket upon arrival to the Prudential Center on Wednesday morning.
What happens if it rains?
Rain or shine, all graduates, faculty, etc., will parade from the Prudential Center to NJPAC as planned. If it’s raining the morning of graduation, we suggest you bring a small folding umbrella. In the event of severe inclement weather, check the campus operating status at the bottom of the Rutgers–Newark homepage or call 973-353-1766 for further instructions.
Where do I return my locker key?
To Rebecca Enright Siroky in Room 170.
If I lost my locker key, what should I do?
You will need to pay $25.00 (cash or check).
Where do I pick-up my cap and gown?
Cap and gowns will be available for pick-up at the campus bookstore.
When is the last day to pick up my cap and gown?
TBD. No one will be available the morning of graduation to give you your gown.
Do I get to keep my cap and gown?
How can I order a large diploma?
Each student will receive two diplomas (one large, one small) on stage, unless there are outstanding financial (or other) obligations to the University.
When do I find out if I am receiving an honor or prize?
Information about who will be receiving the various prizes, honors, and awards is not announced until the ceremony at NJPAC.
Will there be a professional photographer at the Law School graduation?
Yes. Island Photography will take a photo of each graduate receiving his/her diploma and will contact you directly several weeks after the ceremony about your purchase options.
When will I receive my yearbook?
Yearbooks will be mailed to your home address after graduation. They are usually mailed in January. Please make sure that Dean Rothman’s office has an up-to-date address as we will not mail to the Talbott Apartments or University Square housing. If you are not sure where you will be living, it is a good idea to use an address you can be certain of, such as a parent’s.
