Campus Safety

The Department of Public Safety is a service organization responsible for the oversight of life safety responses, the University Police Department, Security Division, Key Shop, Transportation Services, Shuttle Bus Transportation, and a campus-wide card access program at Rutgers–Newark.

The centerpiece of the Department is the Rutgers Police Department whose primary responsibility is to protect and serve the Newark Campus community. The Police Department is in operation 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The Department is located at 200 University Avenue, just to the south of Parking Deck I. Rutgers Police Officers are commissioned by the State of New Jersey to enforce Criminal and Motor Vehicle Statutes. University Police Officers are armed, and are always in direct radio communication with Police Headquarters. Officers patrol the campus by foot, bicycle, marked, and unmarked police vehicles. The Department has an excellent working relationship with the law enforcement community at the Municipal, County, State and Federal levels. They use the latest in law enforcement technology, such as Radar, LoJack Recovery, and SCIC/NCIC.
