For its annual “Ladies Day” celebration on Tuesday, November 5, 2013, the Women’s Law Forum (WLF) at Rutgers School of Law–Newark will feature a panel of female judges from federal, state, and local courts, a networking forum and reception.
WLF also will present its Outstanding Woman of the Year Award to the Honorable Rosemary Gambardella ’79, Judge of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey. Upon graduating from Rutgers–Newark Law School, Judge Gambardella served as law clerk to the late Chief Bankruptcy Judge Vincent J. Commisa and then senior staff counsel to Hugh M. Leonard, the first U.S. Trustee for the Districts of New Jersey and Delaware. Judge Gambardella was sworn in as a U.S. Bankruptcy Judge in May 1985, becoming the first woman on the Bankruptcy Court in the District of New Jersey. She served as Chief Judge from August 1998 to August 2005. Judge Gambardella sits in the Newark vicinage where she oversees commercial and consumer bankruptcy cases.
The Ladies’ Day event traces its history to Harvard Law School in the 1960s when it was the only day on which then Property professor W. Barton Leach would allow female students to speak in class. Inspired by the evolution of the role of women in both law schools and the legal community, student groups throughout the country now use Ladies’ Day to commemorate women’s progress in the legal profession and to highlight the barriers women have overcome to become successful lawyers.
The charge for the event, which includes the panel discussion, networking forum and post-event cocktail reception, is $20. For more information, contact email@example.com.
