Miguel Pozo ’98 Receives Honorary Doctorate From Bloomfield College

June 11, 2013 –

Rutgers School of Law–Newark alumnus Miguel Alexander Pozo, a partner with Lowenstein Sandler LLP and president-elect of the Hispanic National Bar Association, was given an honorary Doctor of Laws degree by Bloomfield College. Awarded in recognition of his leadership in the legal field and the Hispanic community, the degree was presented on May 23, 2013 during the college’s 140th commencement.

Pozo began his address with the following quote from Winston Churchill: “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.” He urged the graduates to define their own success and “take the shot.” And, he added, if there is someone in their lives who, like the pseudonymous guidance counselor “Mrs. Smith” who told Pozo that college was not in his future, recognize the spark that attitude ignited and thank their own Mrs. Smith. “I could have listened to her, or I could define my own success and take the shot,” Pozo said.

“You serve as a role model to all who would consider a legal career,” reads the honorary degree citation. A litigator who has represented a wide range of businesses and Fortune 500 companies on critical business issues, Pozo has been recognized for his professional accomplishments, leadership and community service by several organizations and publications including the New Jersey Commission on Professionalism in the Law, Super Lawyers Magazine, the New Jersey Law Journal, NJBIZ, and Essence

In September 2013 Pozo will become president of the Hispanic National Bar Association, which represents the interests of more than 100,000 Hispanic attorneys, judges, law professors, legal assistants, and law students in the U.S. and its territories. He has been a member of the organization’s board of governors since 2004.
