Recruitment and retention of the scholars and teachers who prepare our students to become excellent lawyers and who further the academic reputation of the school is as intense as student recruitment. Faculty productivity requires extensive research, travel to present their scholarship not simply nationally but internationally, and resources to involve students and the larger community in their work. Over the years, the law school has been home to some of the most distinguished minds in legal education. Today we boast numerous faculty who have been recognized for their scholarship, advocacy, and teaching. To continue to attract and to retain a law faculty of that caliber, we need to expand funding for faculty research, travel, and support.
A Senior Chaired Professorship recognizes the most distinguished members of the faculty and may be endowed for $5 million. An endowed Faculty Chair requires a minimum contribution of $3 million. Both endowments support a faculty member’s research and salary for as long as the professor remains on the faculty. An endowed Term Professorship, which can be created and named for $2 million, is similar to a Faculty Chair, but supports a faculty member for a set term, and then rotates to a different faculty member. To create and name an endowed Faculty Research Fund, which supports the research of an individual faculty member, requires $500,000.
