Application Instructions for First-Year Students

Application forms and information are available on our website or through the Law School Admissions Council on-line electronic application service. Should you use our website, you must print the application, complete it, and send it directly to the Admissions Office. Applications prepared electronically via the Law School Admission Council (www.lsac.org) are sent directly to the law school from LSAC electronically and in printed form. Applicants filing electronically through LSAC are required to print out the CERTIFICATION LETTER found at the end of the application, sign it, and mail it together with the $65 application fee in the form of a check or money order, made payable to Rutgers University, or a completed credit card payment form to: Rutgers School of Law–Newark, Admissions Office, 123 Washington Street, Newark, NJ 07102. LSAC does NOT collect the application fee.

Each candidate for admission must take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) and register with the Law Services Data Assembly Service (LSDAS). Law Services can be contacted either through their website, www.lsac.org, or by phone, 215-968-1001.

LSAT scores older than June 2007 will not be accepted for consideration for admission. The February 2010 LSAT is the last testing date for which scores will be considered for Fall 2010 admission.

Transcripts from all undergraduate and graduate schools attended must be sent to Law Services. All letters of recommendation are processed through Law Services. At least one letter of recommendation is required and must be processed through Law Services. However, additional letters of recommendation submitted to Law Services will be reviewed by the law school Admissions Committee. When at least one letter of recommendation has been received, the file is considered complete and ready for review.

Personal interviews for the purposes of admission are not part of the application process. Candidates are welcome to visit the law school on an informal basis. Group information sessions are conducted in the fall to answer questions and to explain the admissions process. The schedule will be posted on our website in late September.

Applicants with medical, physical, or other disabilities may request the Special Accommodation information packet from Law Services. In addition, students with disabilities may voluntarily attach a supplemental page to their application to explain any discrepancies between ability and performance. This information will be kept strictly confidential and will not adversely affect decision.

A $65 application fee must accompany the application either in the form of a check, money order, or credit card payment. If paying by credit card, please fill out and sign the credit card payment form and return it with your application. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Rutgers University.

The deadline for submitting applications is on or before March 15th. Completed files are sent to the law school Admissions Committee for review. A completed file consists of:

(1) a completed 2010 application

(2) $65 application fee (check, money order, or credit card form)

(3) signed Certification Letter if filing electronically through LSAC

(4) LSDAS report consisting of the LSAT score, transcript analysis, and at least one letter of recommendation.
